I keep hearing that she was repeatedly assaulting him while he was driving, which could have resulted in a fatal car accident, killing them both. That sounds like something that would infuriate me the idea of someone playing with my life. Given an extreme situation and/or an incompatible partner, anyone may resort to violence. ... more

Crystal Backus, just how did you arrive at your conclusions? What exactly are you basing them on hearsay and news? People who can’t think for themselves are easily convinced and always destructive, because they lack the critical thinking skills (intelligence) necessary to be constructive. Chris Brown is human and imperfect just like the rest of us, and he too can make mistakes that he can learn and grow from.... more

I absolutely disagree with Oprah's statement which claims that, "If a man hits you once, he will hit you again." One hit does not establish a pattern of abuse. There is nothing on which to base any guess that "...he will hit you again." How do you determine the probability of recurrence without examining each case on its own merits - character traits, the history of the subject relationships, facts of each case, etc.? This sounds like stereotyping to me. A stereotype is "a fixed notion of a person or gro...... more

We (humans) are programmable creatures of habit. This means that we can grow accustomed to, and make a habit out of just about anything. Do you have any idea how many times I hear women and men say, "I never thought I could do that"? This is after they make a habit of whatever they didn't think they could do even once. Given an extreme situation (or programming [life experiences, etc.]), we may stoop to levels we never dreamt possible. ... more

We (women) must draw firm lines and enforce them early in our relationships. We must eradicate a potential habit before it takes shape. This means that our reaction to the first insult or hit is extremely more important than our reaction to the second hit. My hypothesis: ***Given an extreme situation and/or an incompatible partner, anyone may resort to mild violence.*** ... more

People fight for so many different reasons, and they hit for so many different reasons. We can't rely on generalizations to address all domestic violence cases, the details of which range from mild to extreme. We must look at all of the important facts behind each case and develop custom solutions. Think of the mild cases as a common cold and the extreme cases as HIV. Would you treat both viruses with the same drug?... more

“If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck…” it is not always a duck. We are not dealing with ducks; we’re dealing with humans. People and relationship vary to such a great extent that we cannot use, “The Domestic Violence Wheel” in every case to stereotype. We need to stop being lazy and examine every case one by one. We need to look deeper. A deeper and full understanding of the domestic violence problem will help us find solutions. ... more

My concern is that we are using the Rihanna and Chris Brown incident to stereotype men who are involved in one-off (isolated) instances and other mild occurrences of domestic violence. I would hate for a child or children to lose a good father, because a vulnerable mom submits to pressure from those who stereotype men, particularly men who were involved in a single episode of domestic violence.... more
